SMITH PARK WINTER GALA

The weather was beautiful for people but not so good for snow at the annual Smith Park Winter Gala.  Hundreds came for a few rounds of winter golf, to paint a spot on the YMCA mural or try their hand at carving a giant block of snow.  By the end of the day some of the sculptures were melting but the enthusiam wasn't as the winners of the coveted awards waited to see who would win.  Thanks to Mihms for gallons of wounderful chili, Manderfields for cookies, Got Java for coffee.  Thanks to Doty Island Development Council for their coordination of the event.

MENASHA SQUAD DESIGN CONTEST

The City of Menasha Police Department is looking for the community’s involvement in developing a new graphics design for our patrol vehicles. The Department has sadly said goodbye to recent retirees and has welcomed new officers and a new Chief to lead us into the future.  In addition to all of those changes, the traditional Ford Crown Victoria police vehicle was discontinued.  As a result, our patrol vehicle and its graphics design will be changing to reflect Menasha’s journey into the future.  This design contest is open to those who reside or work in the City of Menasha.  Please include a brief description of your design and how it represents Menasha.  The creator of the selected design will be publicly recognized when it is unveiled on the new patrol vehicles.  Please include your name and contact information with your submission.  Design submissions must be received by March 1, 2012.  The design submissions and questions can be submitted to:
Officer Matt Albrecht
430 First Street
M
enasha, WI  54952
920-967-3500
malbrech@ci.menasha.wi.us

The paint scheme for the vehicles will continue to be black and white.  The hood, truck, roof, and front and rear fenders will be black, the doors will be white.  Vehicle outlines, images of our shoulder patch and badge, along with our current squad design are available on the police department’s website.

Here is a list of guidelines that will be applied when considering the submitted designs:

The design should tie the police patrol vehicle to important aspects or history of the community/region.

The police patrol vehicle should have both the symbol of authority and the wording of the authority spelled out, i.e., a replica of the agencies badge or shoulder patch and the word POLICE.

The agency authority, i.e., "POLICE" should be the largest and the clearest of the lettering. The jurisdiction, i.e, "MENASHA," while not necessarily as prominent, must be clear and legible.

The markings of “911”, “EMERGENCY 911”, or statement of service to the community may be placed on the front or rear fenders, however should be less prominent from the authority lettering and must not be visually distracting.

RECALL ELECTION COSTS

I've received several questions regarding last weeks newspaper article regarding the cost of a potential recall election in Menasha.  Our cost of $31,000 appeared high compared to others on the list.  When our city clerk was asked for the information they were asked to provide information for the November 2010 and April 2011 elections and given one spot to fill in the information.  Therefore the information provided by Menasha is actually the cost of both the April and November elections combined, not a single election.  I am not sure how the other area clerks responded. It’s unfortunate that the survey sent by the GAB which requested the information wasn’t clearer to provide a better picture of what the election would actually cost.

We have $82,585 budgeted for elections in 2012.  The budget included an election in February, April, August, November, and one special election.  The average cost would be $16,517 per election.   Being that we are not having a February primary but will likely see two recall elections (primary and general election) we will likely hold the five budgeted elections this year and be within the already budgeted amount.
